Presentation: Unit-Led Just-In-Time Coaching: Part of a Winning Strategy to Improve Hand Hygiene
Presented by: Lori Moore MPH, MSCE, BSN, RN, a-IPC
Sponsored by Gojo. 1.0 CE available
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Just-in-time Coaching (JIT) is a strategy that has been effective at improving hand hygiene behavior. However, this valuable on-the-spot coaching occurs only sporadically. Considering the many opportunities for hand hygiene, JIT coaching led by infection preventionists (IPs) cannot provide healthcare workers with the consistent, immediate feedback that they need to make hand hygiene an automatic behavior. Recognizing that unit leadership and frontline healthcare workers are closest to the patient, who better to speak up and provide the immediate reminders when hand hygiene opportunities are missed? This presentation will help IPs in assisting their facilities to build an effective unit-led JIT coaching program by reviewing the critical steps for success.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Describe the value of unit-led JIT coaching in providing a strong infrastructure upon which to improve unit-level safety culture.
2. Describe why nurse managers and frontline healthcare workers may be best positioned to provide reminders when hand hygiene opportunities are missed.
3. Identify important steps in building a successful unit-led JIT coaching program.
